I was born in Goleta, CA and grew up in a 100 year old house on a famous botanist’s avocado orchard. Goleta was home to Powell Peralta and Shorty’s skate companies, a good punk and metal scene, and a vibrant college community so I came of age mixing with that and messing around in the empty spaces there at the very tip of the So Cal Megacity.
I have traveled the world as a musician and founded a non-profit all ages venue that hosted a lot of now semi-famous bands and allowed kids to trade charity work to get into shows. I started in art by making posters for shows. These posters started getting collected by people, then sold. So I decided to sell some too. Then I made some single run shirts, sold all of them, and moved on to fine art, album art for labels, merch design, etc.
At the same time I went to college. I have a Doctrine and Theology degree, a BA in History, a marketing degree, an AA in Graphic Design, and a professional certification from a one year motion graphics design program. I also went to music school. So if you need someone to sing you a song about the internal politics of the 3rd Crusade or Pancho Villa’s invasion of Columbus, New Mexico while creating a collage on these subjects and then making it into a motion graphic cartoon with infographics about the moral implications of decisions made all at 112 beats per minute I’m your guy. Then we can publish it and I can look at the analytics and tell you why it wasn’t a hit.
The truth is I love motion and graphic design. You have to work with limitations to communicate effectively while adding a sort of practical beauty to every day life. That’s why I do it. That and money. My background in marketing helps me understand the goals of my work, and my love of history helps me understand both storytelling and the human element we try to reach.
